When “闇” fills a head
Why it is in the set
It was the last character decided and the one with the most conditions attached. A joke generator that tells somebody their head is mostly darkness could do real harm on the wrong day, so 闇 carries the lowest weight in the draw of any character in the set, and every generated line for it is checked against a block list covering illness and distress. What survives is the mild version: a mood, a grudge, a thing not being looked at directly. Removing it altogether was considered and rejected, because a set of 36 where nothing is ever dark would flatter rather than amuse.
What a head full of it looks like
A mood with no obvious cause that will be gone by Thursday. Something you have decided not to think about, taking up room by not being thought about. A head led by 闇 is usually just having a grey week.
Words that use it
闇 (yami, darkness), 暗闇 (an'yami, pitch dark), 闇市 (yamiichi, a black market), 完全に闇 (kanzen ni yami, slang: completely in the dark about something), 小闇 (koyami, dusk).
Kanji it turns up with
無 (nothing at all) behind 闇 is treated gently by the generator. 笑 (laughing) behind it is the combination the quips like best, because it is the truest.
Where “闇” comes from
The gate radical 門 on the outside, with 音, sound, inside. A gate that is shut: you can hear through it but not see.
門 as an outer frame turns up in 間 (an interval), 開 (to open), 閉 (to close) and 関 (a barrier). Once you see the gate the characters group themselves.
闇 (yami) is literal darkness, and also the shady side of things: 闇市 is a black market.
