1. What this site does
You type a name. A grid of 120 tiles fills up with eight different kanji. The one that takes the most space is the top kanji, shown with the share it holds and a one-line quip.
That is the whole site. The same name always gives the same result, however often you try it. There is also a daily reading that changes with the date, and a pair reading that compares two names.
2. You do not need to read Japanese
Each of the 36 kanji stands for one ordinary thing: sleep, money, cats, deadlines, the dark. Every one has a page explaining what it means and why it is in the set.
The quip is written in English and talks about the thing, not the character, so the result reads even if the tiles do not.
3. Not fortune telling, not a personality test
There is nothing behind the result. No statistics, no psychology, and none of the Japanese name-divination traditions it might look like. The letters of the name go through a keyed hash, and the resulting number picks the kanji.
If it feels accurate, that is because the words are broad enough to fit almost anyone. It is the same reason a horoscope feels accurate.
4. How it is built
The name becomes a keyed value, that value seeds a random number generator, and a weighted draw picks eight kanji. The share held by the top one is drawn from eight fixed distributions. The arrangement comes from the same seed, so the result is identical every time.
The quip is written by an AI. The AI is given the top kanji, which of four fill patterns came up, and your answers to the five questions. It is never given the name. Two people who draw the same combination see the same line.
5. What we are careful about
- A machine check rejects any line touching appearance, gender, age, illness, disability, origin or wealth.
- There is no database that stores names.
- A result made from someone's name can be taken down at that person's request.
Even so, nothing stops someone typing another person's name and sharing the result. Please do not use this to make fun of a real person.
